Shanine Meyer
Growing up, I had always been considered the analytical one of our family. This, paired with my passion for helping people, is what led me to Audiology – a career that fully encompasses both, to offer the best possible care to my patients. I deeply enjoy doing what I do, which is why I put every effort into delivering high quality, evidence-based and holistic clinical care.
I graduated with a BSc. (Hons) in Audiology from the University of Cape Town, in 2019. After the completion of my degree, I was placed at Madwaleni District Hospital in the Eastern Cape for my community service year. This was the first time I had left my home in Cape Town and I felt completely overwhelmed by the contrasting experiences of living in a rural community compared with my “City Life”. But then, I discovered that providing hearing healthcare in an under-resourced community presented me with one of my life’s greatest gifts. I had an opportunity to challenge some of the boundaries that existed in providing audiological care for my patients by being resourceful, empathic and gracious. I found that my heart grew even bigger in my quest to serve my patients there! I decided to stay an additional 2.5 years beyond my required community service in the Mbashe district, to make sure that there was a legacy of care and infrastructure to build on when I finally came back home to Cape Town (much later than I had originally planned).

Back in Cape Town, I worked in a private practice for two years where I developed more knowledge and skills in hearing assessment, the large variety of hearing aid technologies, and advocacy for good hearing health care. I have found a home at NBHearing & Balance, where Audiology feels whole. I have the privilege of assisting in all spheres related to hearing and balance disorders in an environment of growth and innovation. As a team, we strive to understand patients holistically and delivery a professional and ethical service to all patients, which resonates with my personal ethos.
